Alappuzha :- “Alappuzha the Venice of the East” and tourist’s Paradise is located 63 Kms. From Cochin City on the NH 47. The water locked district has emerged as one of the major tourist destination of the country. The famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of August every year at the Vembanad lake. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed. A unique place in the maritime history of Kerala. Alappuzha is also famous for houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Aluva :- The important pilgrim centre and summer resort is located on the left bank of Periyar river 25 km. north of Cochin City. Here the annual Shivarathri fair is celebrated with great deal. Angamali :- It lies 40 kms. From Cochin city on the NH 47 and is regarded as the fastest growing town in Kerala. Angamali is also famous for its nearness to pilgrim places Kaladi and Malayattur. Bhoothathankettu :- The beautiful dam site is 63 km from Cochin City. The reservoir here has boating facilities and the area is also considered to be a “trekkers paradise” Chennamangalam :-This small township is 42 kms from kochi and was one of the most important Jewish centres in Kerala. The old Jewish colony here has a synagogue built in oriental style. Cheruthuruthi :- The town is located 110 Kms from Cochin City. The town is well known for the kerala Kalamandalam, established by the poet Sri Vallathol Narayana Menon in 1930. Traditional art forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyatam, Thullal and folk dances are trained here. Chovvara :-The summer resort of Cochin royal family is located on the bank of river Alwaye. The town is also well known for the mat weaving. Guruvayur :-It is a major Hindu Pilgrim centre, located 111kms. From kochi. It is known as the ‘Dwaraka of South‘ and famous for the Sree Krishna Swamy temple. The Lord of Guruvayur is known as “Guruvayurappan” The temple is also renowned for the healing powers. The temple is also famous for Hindu marriage ceremony and also the first feeding ceremony of the child. The main festivals celebrated here are ulsavam in February with elephant processions, Vishukani in April, Astami Rohini in August and Ekadasi in December. |
